[medi K / HEALTH IN NEWS] Ewha Womans University Medical Center (이대여성의료원) in Seoul has launched a state-of-the-art Cell and Gene Therapy Center, marking a significant step forward in treating complex blood cancers. The new facility, now fully operational, offers advanced CAR-T cell therapy, expanding treatment options for patients battling intractable conditions and positioning South Korea as a hub for innovative healthcare.

CAR-T therapy, a groundbreaking immunotherapy, involves genetically modifying a patient’s T-cells to target and destroy cancer cells. This treatment is primarily used for patients with B-cell lymphoma, lymphocytic leukemia, and multiple myeloma who have not responded to conventional therapies. For visitors to South Korea seeking cutting-edge medical care or exploring its advancements in healthcare, this development underscores the country’s growing reputation in medical innovation.

The center operates under a multidisciplinary care model, integrating specialists from infectious diseases, neurology, and intensive care to swiftly address complications. Potential side effects, such as inflammation, neurotoxicity, or cytokine release syndrome, are managed through rigorous protocols and robust safety systems. Dedicated nurses provide comprehensive support throughout the treatment process, ensuring patients receive personalized care.

“We are committed to delivering safe, high-quality cellular therapies to patients with challenging blood cancers through our in-house operations,” said Dr. Soo-kyung Kim (김수경), head of the center. Her vision reflects Ewha’s dedication to advancing patient outcomes through precision medicine.
Hospital Director Young-chul Moon (문영철) emphasized the broader impact: “With our extensive clinical expertise, we aim to provide tailored treatments and drive progress in blood cancer care through next-generation therapies and drug research.”

The center’s opening was celebrated on October 16 with a ceremony held in the basement of Ewha Mokdong Hospital’s (이대목동병원) main building. For those visiting South Korea, this milestone highlights the nation’s blend of tradition and innovation, offering not only cultural richness but also access to world-class medical advancements.
